Moxie & Magic
Fused Glass
I have not lived life in a straight line. In high school, I thought I was going to be a classical pianist. Then I discovered history and politics. I got my BA in International Politics. If my first job been with the State Department, I probably would have remained a government employee. Instead, I worked on Capitol Hill for about 4 years. It wasn't a good fit. In college, I had also studied dance and after leaving the government, I returned to dance and did so professionally for 15 years (ballet, modern, Middle Eastern) and competed as an amateur in ballroom dance, with a particular love of Latin dances.
When my body started complaining, I apprenticed at a photography studio. I eventually started my own commercial photography studio, doing everything from family portraits to product photography. I taught various classes for many years for the Art League in Alexandria, VA. I am co-author of Focus on Lighting Photos, and lead author of the 6th edition of Light Science & Magic, a leading academic book on photographic lighting. I am semi-retired now, but still do portraiture for many Federal courts.
A friend introduced me to fused glass a couple of years ago and I was hooked immediately. The world of fused glass offers endless opportunity for self-expression. I look forward to continuing my journey in glass! My goal is to produce items of art that are also functional.
I remain active and walk thousands of steps a day. In my walks, I started taking photos, mostly with a macro lens attached to my cell phone. I then play with them in apps and Photoshop. Thus, my Dreamscapes series of fine art photos was created...and a new adventure was born!
Moxie & Magic = Having the nerve to try new things and create magic in glass and photography!
I sell at various craft markets, including Art on the Avenue in Alexandria, VA which draws 30,000+ visitors a year. I also sell through Made in ALX, a local shop at 415 King Street, Alexandria, VA, which carries work by Alexandria, VA artists.
